Summary

A fun and light film about a girl, Rebecca Bloomwood, a journalist who cannot control her urge to shop expensive fashion items. The story has many important themes, such as friendship, forgiveness, and second chances. However, one secondary theme that unravels within the plot is that of diversity at the workplace.

Rebecca is aiming to get her dream job at a fashion magazine called “Alette”, but instead, an opportunity arises for a journalist position at the financial magazine “Successful
Savings” which belongs to the same publishing group. She decides to give it a try, hoping she would manage to transfer to Alette at some point, and this is where the plot starts to get interesting.

Having nothing to do with finance, and even more so, a bad personal debt due to her extravagant shopping habits, Rebecca would be considered anything but credible as a journalist for such a magazine.

Nevertheless, determined to get her dream job, no matter what, she shows up for the Successful Savings interview. There is a funny scene, where she sits at the waiting area with the rest of the candidates, who are all dressed conservatively, wearing suits and reading newspapers. She, however, is wearing a colourful and flashy outfit, her long red hair loose, and flips through a fashion magazine. It was obvious that she did not belong there.

Although the interview did not go very well, the editor offers her the job, as he believes that she can help readers understand finance from a more simplistic point of view, and therefore opening a whole new demographic for the magazine.

Her first published article receives much attention from the readers and it is a big success, even internationally. Everyone wants to meet her. They consider her a breath of fresh air for the magazine.

The editor took a risk. Rebecca’s profile did not fit the ideal candidate’s profile. But he saw something special in her. He did not judge her by her appearance, nor was he concerned by how different she was compared to the magazine’s identity and culture.

And the risk he took paid off. So one important message one can get from this story is that diversity can help a business innovate, stand out, and have a competitive edge.
